In 2001, the BLS Lötschbergbahn AG decided to order ten Traxx locomotives for cross-border freight transport. The BLS Cargo locomotives with the Swiss designation Re 485 are technically identical with the SBB Cargo class Re 482 and the DB Cargo class 185 engines with additional Swiss package. The remaining Ae 4/4 engines were retired from service when the Traxx locomotives were delivered between December 2002 and the middle of 2003. The new engines are mainly used to haul transit freight trains from and to Germany.
