After the successful V 200, a single-engine diesel locomotive was planned in the mid-1950s, which was to replace the numerous steam locomotives of the 03, 23, 38 and 50 series on non-electrified lines. The nine pre-series models made by Krupp still had a rounded front end (which earned the locomotive the nickname "Lollo"), which was replaced in series production by the angular shape, which was simpler and cheaper to manufacture. The V 160 was powered by a 1,900 hp 16-cylinder from Mercdes-Benz or Maybach. From 1964 the V 160 built by Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei and MaK went into service. With more than 800 units, the V 160 series is one of the most frequently used mainline diesel locomotives on the DB. The V 160 family includes the 215 to 219, 225 and 226 series. They were used in simple branch line service and regional traffic as well as in front of freight trains, express trains and intercity trains. The 218 series is the last stage of development of the V 160 family. It has electric train heating and a 2500 to 2800 hp engine, which made the auxiliary diesel for the heating generator superfluous. Train heating and shuttle train control ultimately made the 218 a universal locomotive for passenger and freight trains, some of which are still in use today.
