Latrine cars served to dispose of urban waste water, primarily that of large cities. The transport from the cesspools to the loading stations was performed using horse-drawn vehicles. From there, the transport continued to various unloading points in block trains. One of these unloading points was located outside the city gates of Schwäbisch Gmünd. There, the load was dropped into trenches and stored temporarily. Farmers collected the so-called "privy manure" at a later date and then distributed it over the fields of the surrounding countryside.
