To speed up operation to transfer and terminus stations and to improve the lifetime of the locomotives, operation with control cars was greatly expanded starting in the mid-1990s. The new vehicles were converted
from Bmh cars starting in 1994. These received a new head at one end, its appearance corresponding to the locomotives of the BR 628. The engineer thus received a spacious ergonomic workplace.
