Prototype:

Between 1959 and 1977, the Deutsche Bundesbahn DB procured a total of more than 4800 carriages in three layouts for use in local transport but also for the reinforcement of express trains: pure 2nd class, 1st and 2nd class as well as control cars with luggage and 2nd class large compartments. The class letter "n" was assigned to the car family. A prototype car already had the unpainted outer skin with a brushed peacock eye pattern, which was responsible for the nickname "Silberlinge". The absence of painting reduced the weight by about two tons. With a gross vehicle weight of between 27 and 30 tons, the second-class coaches, for example, were at least 5 tons lighter than the pre-war express train coaches of the 1936 design. The D62 axle generator, which was initially installed, limited the top speed to 120 km/h. The technically permissible 140 km/h could be driven with a different axle generator design or by the cars electrically powered by the traction vehicle. In 1969, the DB procured a total of 180 units of the Bnrzb724 design, which can be easily converted into hospital vehicles in the event of a disaster. The striking difference to the previously produced cars is the almost vertical roof end ("pitched roof"). The first control cars had a transition to the next car at the end of the driver's cab, which is why the train driver sat on the right side of the aisle in a draughty little room ("rabbit box"). From 1972 onwards, the DB was equipped with control cars with a modern "Karlsruhe head". In order to make local transport more attractive, DB had several trains modernised on the inside and painted in pebble grey-orange on the outside from 1984 onwards and used them with matching 218 under the product name City-Bahn. The success of the product prompted DB to modernize more cars from 1990 onwards with newly upholstered seats, modified luggage racks and a new exterior paintwork. A large number of different variants of the types referred to as re-design cars were created, which were initially painted in the then current mint turquoise light grey. From 1993 onwards, the DB received control cars with the driver's cab side, the "Wittenberger Kopf", reminiscent of the VT 628 railcar. In 2019, 60 years after the first silver coins were put into service, wagons are still in daily use.
