One of the most popular and successful series on all tracks is the BR 50. From 1939 until 1948 a total of 3164 copies of this machine were put into service. Many BR 50 replacement boilers came from the BR 52, which were named as ÜK boilers. They were welded together from flat sheets and were intended to save costs, especially during the war as a simplified design. Although the ÜK boilers were designed for short operating times only, they lasted surprisingly long and reliable. This made the BR 50, together with the BR44, the backbone of freight traffic, but due to its maximum speed of 80 km/h, it was also regularly used in front of passenger trains. Due to the low axle load, they were also at home on all secondary routes and were used throughout Germany and in other European countries. At the end of the 1950s, the DB produced the unique cabin tender and coupled it with many machines of the BR 50. This unique appearance in particular makes it unmistakable as a classic on the rails. However, there were also quite a few ÜK 50s with tub tenders or box tenders. The cabs were partly adapted to the various tender variants. This resulted in versions with closed uniform cabs or the "Norwegian Guide House". Today with the 50 2988 the last original DB-fifty has been preserved operational unit with the "Dampflokfreunde Schwarzwald-Baar e.V.".
