For the „Rheingold“ express train and other top-gradelong-distance express trains DB cooperated with theindustry in developing a version of the E 10, whichwas designed to travel at 160 km/h. The first versionsof the E 10.12 still had the angular box-type hood andcobalt blue and ivory paintwork. The version with the"crease" was not introduced until later for the Rheingold and other TEE trains.
