From 1954 to 1958 the NS ordered new freight train baggage cars (caboose). The Dg series 2421-2700 was built on extended chassis of old freight cars. A large number were withdrawn from service between 1964 and 1966. Eleven of the withdrawn cars were given a new destination as maintenance car. In the course of the 1970s, more DGs that had been removed from regular service were given a new purpose as crew car or maintenance car.
