Prototype information V 100 - family
As a further development of the V 80 built in 1952, the first 5 very successful test machines of the V 100 series were built by MaK in 1958 for multi-purpose service. In 1961/62 another 36 pre-series locomotives were delivered. After that, a total of 364 locomotives with a 1,100 hp engine and a top speed of 90 km/h were made, also by other manufacturers - later class 211
The performance of the class 211 (V 100.10) with 1,100 hp was sufficient for secondary routes, but a higher engine output was required for routes with inclines and on main routes. There was already a Daimler 12-cylinder in a test locomotive (V 100 006), based on this the V 100.20 (later renamed to BR 212) initially received engines from Daimler with 1,350 hp. Some of the 12 cylinders were later supplied by MAN, while Daimler-Diesel received most of them under license from Maybach.
In the mid-1960s, ten of the 381 units built were equipped for use on steep routes and classified as V 100 2332 to 2341, the later class 213. These locomotives were given hydrodynamic brakes and an additional gear oil heat exchanger, for example , which is why the auxiliary diesel was replaced by a battery charger with an external power connection. Some of these BR 213s replaced the BR 94.5s on the Rennsteigbahn, where they are still in service today.
