As the successor to the legendary Crocodiles, the SBB procured a larger series of Ae 6/6 locomotives from 1952 onwards, intended as universal locomotives for use on the Gotthard route. Each locomotive bore the coat of arms of a canton, a cantonal capital, or a major Swiss city. For this reason, they became known as a coat of arms locomotives.
