Class 217 of the German Federal Railways (DB) was a more powerful advancement of the well-known V-160 family and was a technical interim solution to meet a specific operational need: the use of heavy push-pull trains with electric train heating on non-electrified lines.Between 1965 and 1968, a total of 15 locomotives were built by Krauss-Maffei. These engines are considered the technical precursors of the later class 218, which was equipped with an integrated heating generator at the factory. The locomotives were divided into so-called prototypes (217 001 – 003) and pre-series machines (217 011 – 022).
