Five prototypes of the new Class 120 with three-phase asynchronous traction motors were built in 1979 and 1980. These locomotives were initially approved for 160 km/h. After extensive test runs, all of them were approved for 200 km/h, with the 120 001 reaching a record speed of 265 km/h in 1984.
