Diesel Locomotive V 60 in purple red and black livery with ivory pin stripping. 3 DB lights changing with direction. District Region: Essen, Depot: Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck

Prototype:

The German Federal Railroad had, after its founding, a lack of small shunting locomotives . Therefore, "The most famous" Diesel Shunting locomotive of the DB was developed. In 1951almost all major locomotive builders were involved in the construction and development of this locomotive. Over 1000 pieces of the V 60 were built in a period of nine years.  942 locomotives were sold to the German Federal Railways , the rest went to other European railway companies. The V 60 has a top speed of 60 km/h and was able to pull transfer trains in addition to shunting. The frame is completely welded. To achieve more friction weight, reinforced side frames and cover plates were installed in some locomotives. The frame is supported by leaf springs over the axles. The wheelbase of the two outer axles is 4.3 m, so the middle axle has a play of  30 mm to improve negotiating tight curves.  There is also a mechanical wheel flange lubrication device of the type De Limon  installed. The three axles are powered by a Voith Turbo transmission which drives the jackshaft and coupling rods of the locomotive, which gives it the striking appearance . In the 1980s they were reclassified by the DB as a small locomotive and named as series 360-365 . The V60 is indispensable from the rail service. After almost 50 years of service of nearly all the machines it shows that it wa a really successful design for the V 60 . According to the vehicle inventory of Summer 2012 there are still 405 machines in the stock of the DB, private operators or museum railways.
