G Scale Steam Locomotives

125 years of the Harzquer and Brocken Railway

As early as the 60s of the 19th century, a railway across the Harz Mountains was planned. However, due to the difficult route over the mountains and the associated high costs, the projects were not realized. It was not until 1896 that the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company (NWE) was founded in Berlin. In an unbelievably short time, the lines of the Harzquer and Brocken Railway were completed. On 27 March 1899, the Mallet steam locomotives, which are still known today, opened the train service. Celebrate with us 125 years of the Harzquer and Brocken Railway. The "biggest of the small". Exactly 125 years later, on March 27, 2024, two special trains, which were combined into one train in Drei-Annen-Hohne, took off from Nordhausen and Wernigerode to the highest mountain in northern Germany, the Brocken.

Steam locomotive class 99.22

At the end of the 1920s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were also derived from the standardised DRG procurement programme for standard-gauge steam locomotives according to the standard construction principles. In 1930, Schwartzkopff delivered three five-coupled engines as 99 221-223, which were the DRG's most powerful narrow-gauge steam locomotives at the time. Only 99 222 survived the war, which is still in service with the HSB today in its approximate original state.
