The first series of 2400 locomotives was put into service by the Dutch State Railways from 1954 on. Besides pulling a few passenger trains, they were primarily used to haul goods trains and in shunting services. In 1981/1982 nineteen locomotives were equipped with an A-front signal, allowing them to operate on track sections near the German border.
