From 1976 to 1995, ÖBB procured 217 four-axle thyristor locomotive class 1044. The 5.120 kW locomotives with speeds of up to 160 km/h characterised the modern image of the ÖBB for many years.
In 2001, the 1044 078 received the Valousek design in addition to other modernisation work. In April 2010, the push-pull train control was installed and the locomotive was redesignated 91 81 1144 078-3.
