Unlimited System Siemens Transportation System (TS) in Munich developed the ES 64 four-system locomotive (Eurosprinter with 6,4 megawatts of continuous output) for heavy-duty train service throughout Europe. It can operate with AC power systems in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway (15KV/16.7 Hz ) and in Denmark, Luxembourg, northern France and Hungary (25KV/16.7 Hz). Its use in DC systems extends to Belgium, Italy and Poland (3KV) and the Netherlands and southern France (1.5 KV). In addition, it can also be used in the so-called combined systems in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. DB Cargo has ordered 100 of these machines as class 189 locomotives (to be delivered between 2003 and 2005). The locomotive is equipped with two trucks (B-B wheel arrangement) and has a total weight of 87 tons; the length over buffers is 19.580 m / 64 ft and the maximum speed is 140 km/h or 87 mph. Visually, this locomotive is similar to the modern German Federal Railroad electric locomotives with their distinctive front end. The dished sidewalls not only help to reduce weight, but also give it a distinguishing appearance. In addition to the four type SBS 2T pantographs that are required, the AC master switch, the system selection switch and the lightning arrester are located on the roof. It was necessary to move these components outside to make space in the engine room for DC components and the train protection system, which varies from country to country.
