Conversion car 3yg(e) - the prototype
At the beginning of the 1950s, more than 20,000 two-, three- and four-axle Prussian and Bavarian types made up the DB fleet for passenger and express trains, most of which were outdated and in need of repair. The available resources were not enough to add new wagons, so the stocks were modernized: the rebuilt wagons were born. Wheels and underframe were taken over, the structure was rebuilt. By the end of the 1950s, more than 6,500 conversion cars of the 3yg series had been put into service. In order to achieve better running characteristics, two cars were always closely coupled. Wagons with electric heating were given the designation "yge". The last 3yg were not taken out of service until the mid-1980s. An Era 3 layout is not complete without the conversion cars...
