The class 45 was the most powerful of the German steam locomotives. This legendary locomotive was developed by Henschel from 1936 to 1937. Initially only two prototypes were built and extensively tested. The latter revealed that the magic power limit of 3,000 hp had been surpassed. Another 28 units were built in 1940. With a driving wheel diameter of 1.60 meters or 63 inches, these giants were designed for heavy freight service at high speeds. The general change in motive power never did allow these units to demonstrate their advantage. One sample of this colossal steam locomotive can still be admired in the Nrnberg Transportation Museum.
